The facility holds people currently housed in the county jail. That includes pretrial defendants, people waiting for a first appearance or later court date, local sentenced inmates, weekender entries, probation or post-release matters, extradition or fugitive holds, and holds for other counties when accepted. The jail roster is therefore a current housing list. It is not a full criminal-history search, a court docket, or a state-prison locator. Vera's jail-construction data lists Johnston County's 2019 new-jail project with capacity before the project at 191 and capacity after the project at 469. WRAL reported on April 11, 2024 that the new detention center cost $41.2 million, measured 118,000 square feet, and could hold close to 500 inmates in six separate wings. WRAL also reported 262 inmates in the facility on the tour day.

The live county roster showed about 298 to 299 people currently housed on June 23, 2026, depending on refresh time. That count is a point-in-time roster count, not an annual average. Vera's broader county trend data shows why capacity was a serious local issue: Johnston County's jail population rose from 36 in 1970 to more than 270 by 2024, with the old 191-bed jail becoming too small for several periods. UNC's 2019 jail occupancy work listed Johnston above capacity under the old facility, and WRAL described the new building as the county's response to years of crowding.

The capacity figure should be read with source context. Vera gives the specific 469-bed figure, while WRAL's new detention center report uses the public phrasing "close to 500." Neither number changes the lookup process. The roster still lists current county-jail custody, and the jail phone line remains the fallback when a recent arrest has not appeared online.

Johnston County Jail Contact

JCSO's contact page also lists administrative and non-emergency lines for the sheriff's office. Johnston County Jail Visits

Johnston County Jail visitation is video only. JCSO states that visits may be on-site or remote through Paytel. A visitor must set up a Paytel Connect account, use valid state or federal photo identification, receive approval, and then request a video visit 72 hours before the visit date and time. Each inmate is allowed three 15-minute visits per week and only one visit per day. On-site video visits take place at the jail address, not at the courthouse.

Johnston County Jail Mail

Jail mail goes to the inmate by name at P.O. Box 1496, Smithfield, NC 27577, and JCSO says a return address should be included. Books must come directly from a publisher or bookstore, must be soft cover, and cannot contain prohibited content such as nudity, sexually suggestive material, gang signs, drugs, alcohol, or violence. Newspapers and magazines must come from the publisher, such as by subscription. All items are subject to inspection.

Money can be deposited through the jail lobby kiosk at 2879 US-70 BUS E, through JailATM online, or by mailed money order to the jail mailing address. JCSO says no cash or checks should be mailed. The current FAQ says commissary and hygiene orders are limited to $140 per week. Paytel is also the current phone and e-messaging provider. Johnston County Jail Booking

JCSO does not publish a full local intake manual, so the public-facing description should stay with the facts that are documented. A person arrested in Johnston County may be taken before a magistrate and processed into the jail. North Carolina law requires an arrested person to be taken before a magistrate without unnecessary delay, and state law authorizes fingerprints and photographs when a person is arrested, committed to detention, committed after conviction, or convicted of a felony. Once housed, the person may appear on the current-inmate inquiry after processing and roster refresh.

Booking does not mean conviction. The jail roster is a custody and booking record.
