Search Johnston County Inmate Records

Johnston County inmate records are split between county jail custody, recent arrest records, court files, state prison records, and federal or immigration systems. To look up Johnston County inmates online, start with the county jail roster when the person may still be housed in the local detention center. The roster is a current custody list, not a broad historical search tool. Released people, sentenced state prisoners, federal inmates, and immigration detainees may require a different official channel, so the best search path depends on where the person is in the arrest, booking, court, or transfer process.

Johnston County Jail Roster Records

The official current-custody lookup is the Johnston County Inmate Inquiry. The page is tied to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Steve Bizzell, and states that the listed individuals are currently housed in the Johnston County Jail. It also shows a count and a Data Last Updated timestamp, which makes the roster useful for current custody checks. On June 23, 2026, research saw about 298 to 299 people listed, with morning update times on the roster.

Johnston County's roster is not a normal name-search form. It loads a full current list and gives a Sort By dropdown. The visible options are Last name, First Name, Arrest Date, and Charge Description. The list columns are Name, Primary Charge, and Arrest Date. A name link opens the public profile. No login, fee, account, CAPTCHA, booking-number search, date-of-birth search, housing filter, bond filter, or release filter was observed.

The public profile is narrower than many readers expect. It shows basic booking information, but it does not show bond, court date, housing unit, release date, warrant number, arresting agency, or booking number. For charge and bond information, the JCSO FAQ routes readers to the Clerk's Office at 919-209-5400 or the jail at 919-989-5040. Release requirements should be checked with the Magistrate's Office at 919-209-5463.

The screenshot captured from the official current-inmate inquiry shows the live list style, count, timestamp, sort control, names, primary charges, and arrest dates.

Johnston County inmate records current roster with sort options

Because the roster begins as a full list, the main task is sorting and opening the correct profile rather than entering a search query.

Use the Johnston County Inmate Roster

A good Johnston County jail roster search starts by deciding whether the person is likely in local custody now. The county roster covers people currently housed at the Johnston County Jail / Johnston County Detention Center. It does not cover Johnston Correctional Institution, which is a state prison, and it does not replace the NC eCourts Portal for formal charges after arrest.

  1. Open the official current-inmate inquiry and read the top line for the current housed count and Data Last Updated time.
  2. Use Sort By if needed. Last name is usually best for a name check, while Arrest Date is useful for the newest bookings.
  3. Review the Name, Primary Charge, and Arrest Date columns. The primary charge is a short public list-view entry, not the full case file.
  4. Click the person's name to open the inmate profile.
  5. Review name, age, race, sex, booking date, photo if shown, charge, and arrest date.
  6. If bond, court date, or release conditions are needed, call the clerk, jail, or magistrate rather than relying on the roster row.
  7. If the person is not listed, check recent arrest records, NC DAC, BOP, ICE, VINELink, or the court record depending on custody status.

Johnston County Roster Search Fields

The current-inmate inquiry is best described as a roster review tool with sorting, not a form-driven search. That local detail should guide searches and phone follow-ups. A person recently arrested may not appear until booking and roster update steps are complete. A person released from jail may drop from the current roster even when a court case remains active.

There is also a separate recent arrest form. It uses optional First Name, required Last Name, or a required beginning and ending date range within the last 15 calendar days. That tool may show bond amount and bond type, but it is not limited to people still in custody.

Johnston County Inmate Profile Fields

The current-inmate profile is useful when read for what it actually contains. A sample official detail profile showed only a compact public field set. Holds may appear in charge text, such as a hold for another county, but the profile does not explain every release condition or court setting. The court case and clerk record remain the better sources for formal charge status.

FieldWhat It Shows
NameInmate name, usually in last-name, first-name format.
AgeNumeric age, not full date of birth.
RaceShort race code, such as W, when shown.
SexShort sex code, such as M or F.
Booking DateDate booked into the Johnston County Jail.
Inmate PhotoBooking photo if available on the public profile.
ChargeCharge or hold description in the charge table.
Arrest DateArrest date for each listed charge row.

The profile does not display a booking number, full DOB, height, weight, housing unit, bond amount, bond type, warrant number, court date, projected release date, or release status. Booking photos and their limits are covered more directly on the Johnston County jail mugshots page.

Recent Arrests vs. Current Custody

Johnston County's recent arrest search is a separate official tool for Sheriff's Office arrests from the last 15 calendar days. Search by name requires a last name. Search by date range requires both beginning and ending dates in mm/dd/yyyy format, and the range must fall within that 15-day window. Dates are inclusive. This can help when a person was arrested recently but is not clearly listed in current custody.

A recent arrest result may show image, name, age, sex, race, charge, booking agency, date of arrest, bond amount, and type of bond. Those bond fields are a key difference from the current-inmate profile. Still, recent arrest records are not the same as the current jail roster. A person can be arrested and released, or can remain housed on an older arrest outside the recent-arrest window.

The official recent arrest search form shows the name and date-range fields available for recent booking checks.

County Jail, State Prison, Federal Custody

Johnston County has both a county jail and a state prison in Smithfield. The county jail is operated by the Johnston County Sheriff's Office and covers local pretrial detainees, people serving local sentences, holds, and people awaiting court or transfer. Johnston Correctional Institution is operated by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. It houses sentenced adult male state prisoners in minimum custody and reentry programming. It does not use the JCSO jail roster.

Johnston County Inmate Record Facilities

Two local facilities affect Johnston County inmate records. The county jail is the public-custody and booking source. Johnston Correctional Institution is a state prison and reentry facility. Federal and ICE custody may involve other agencies and facilities outside the county because no BOP institution or current ICE detention facility was identified in Johnston County.

Booking Timeline in Johnston County

JCSO does not publish a full local booking workflow, so the public-facing timeline comes from local roster facts and North Carolina procedure. After arrest or court commitment, a person is taken before a magistrate without unnecessary delay under N.C. G.S. 15A-511. Identification, fingerprints, and photographs may be taken under N.C. G.S. 15A-502. Medical screening and property steps occur as part of jail intake.

After release conditions are set, the person may be released, held pending bond, held under a no-bond order, or housed in the jail. If housed, the person may appear on the current-inmate inquiry after processing. The roster's Data Last Updated line is important for very recent arrests. Under N.C. G.S. 15A-601, first appearance timing is governed by state court procedure unless the person is released earlier.

Custody flow: Arrest or commitment, magistrate review, booking and photo processing, release decision, roster listing if housed, then court events through the clerk and eCourts.

Johnston County Jail Visits

After a Johnston County inmate record is found, family-service questions shift to the jail's visitation, mail, phone, and money rules. Johnston County Jail visitation is video only, either on-site or remote, through Paytel. A visitor must set up a Paytel Connect account, provide valid state or federal photo identification for account setup, obtain account approval, and request the visit 72 hours before the requested date and time.

Mail, Phone, and Money

Mail should be addressed to the inmate and sent to Inmate's Name, P.O. Box 1496, Smithfield, NC 27577, with a return address. Books must come directly from a publisher or bookstore, be soft cover, and avoid prohibited content. Inmates may receive up to 10 pictures no larger than 5 x 7 if the pictures do not contain nudity, sexually suggestive content, gang signs, drugs, alcohol, violence, or other offensive content.

JCSO says Paytel Communications provides inmate phone service. Friends and family may set up prepaid phone service through Paytel, and officers do not relay messages. For money, JCSO lists the jail lobby kiosk, JailATM online, and money order by mail to P.O. Box 1496. No cash or checks should be mailed. Current FAQ text says commissary and hygiene orders are limited to $140 per week.

Note: Confirm the person is still housed in the Johnston County Jail before sending money, scheduling a visit, or mailing property-sensitive items.

Public Records and Notifications

When online tools do not answer a Johnston County inmate record question, use official fallback channels. The JCSO jail information number is 919-989-5040, and the Sheriff's Office administrative number is 919-989-5010. In-person questions should be planned around the public-safety campus at 2875 and 2879 US-70 BUS E in Smithfield, with lobby access confirmed before arrival. The county public-records form can be used for public portions of booking or arrest records not online.

NC SAVAN / VINELink is available for custody and release notifications. NC DAC says it includes county jail inmates, state prisoners, probationers, parolees, and registered sex offenders, with notification options such as phone, email, text, or TTY. No official Johnston County Sheriff's Office jail roster app was found. The Smithfield PD app is for city police tips and alerts, not a county jail inmate search.
